Yes ChatGPT is free. At the time of writing this 1/13/2023 ChatGPT is free to use. However there are plans to offer a paid “professional version”
ChatGPT is a computer program created by a company called OpenAI that can hold a conversation with you in a way that appears natural. It is designed like a chatbot to answer follow-up questions, admit when it makes a mistake, and even reject inappropriate requests. ChatGPT is similar to another program called InstructGPT also made by Openai.com, which can follow instructions and give detailed responses.
But, Is ChatGPT free? The answer is Yes, it is free to use. Unlike GPT-3, which requires an API key and a paid plan to access, ChatGPT can be used freely.
Many people confuse ChatGPT and GPT-3, although that is not surprising given the similar names, functions and creator. GPT-3 is a large language model, on it’s own it does nothing. In this case ChatGPT is an application programmed as a chatbot using the information from the GPT-3 language model. InstructGPT is also an application using the GPT-3 language model in a different way.
There are many commercial applications now available that utilize the GPT-3 API providing many different AI services for Ecommerce, Advertising, Marketing, and Blogging / Social Media
In summary, ChatGPT is a computer program created by OpenAI that can hold a conversation with you in a seemingly natural way. Unlike GPT-3, it is free to use, so you can try it out and experience its features without any cost.
OpenAI are currently asking for feedback from users about a proposed paid “professional” version of ChatGPT but as of 1/13/2023 it is free to use.
